SUMMARY:Building beautification with the Downtown Emergency Center
DESCRIPTION:Now you can double your impact! For every volunteer hour at this project\, we’ll donate a pair of socks to keep cold toes toasty this winter season. \nCalling all handy Emerging Leaders! We’re partnering with the Downtown Emergency Center (DESC) for some good old-fashioned building beautification. DESC has been providing emergency shelter for vulnerable adults – especially those living with behavioral health disorders and chronic homelessness – since 1979. The organization has grown with Seattle’s needs and now also offers an array of clinical services and other support. \nAs we all know\, it’s hard enough to keep one tiny apartment clean for a weekend\, much less keep an entire building spiffy for 35+ years! That’s why Emerging Leaders will be lending a hand to paint\, fix\, and otherwise spruce up DESC. Before you dig out those paintbrushes\, click here to snag your spot.

SUMMARY:Make a child's birthday dreams come true
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another opportunity instead. \nAll kids deserve to have a great birthday\, no matter their circumstances. Unfortunately\, sometimes families aren’t able to pay the bills AND give kids the party of their dreams – so that’s where Birthday Dreams comes in! The organization preps party favors and throws parties for kids in need. \nBirthday Dreams is always an Emerging Leaders favorite\, and we’re excited to bring the project back again this fall! Join us for a few hours of crafting\, packing\, and reliving your childhood memories as we put together birthday boxes & the fun stuff they hold. \n

SUMMARY:Give kids in need the chance to read with Page Ahead
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another volunteer project instead. \nImagine a pile of 2.7 million children’s books spread across the state of Washington. Now imagine serving more than 850\,000 kids with those books and other literary programs. Seems like an impossible challenge\, right? Thankfully\, it’s a challenge that Page Ahead has been rising to since 1990. It’s the #1 provider of children’s books and services in Washington and focuses on helping kids from low-income families bump up their reading level and gain the English skills they need to succeed in school. \nThere’s nothing better than curling up with a good book and a cup of warm cider (or a PSL\, anyone?) on a crisp fall day\, and Emerging Leaders will join Page Ahead to make sure the next generation of learners has the chance to do just that. We’ll be supporting the organization in its work – organizing and bundling books\, tidying the facility\, etc. – so that it can spend the next 25 years supporting another million kids across the state. \n

SUMMARY:Get ready for fall with Friends of Youth
DESCRIPTION:October brings cooler temps and more rainy days – for most of us\, that just means an extra layer and maybe a raincoat. However\, for homeless youth\, what seems minor to most people can be a huge burden. Friends of Youth helps alleviate that burden; it’s the only youth shelter on the Eastside\, and offers services and resources in addition to a dry\, warm place to sleep. \nEmerging Leaders will be lending a hand at the organization to prep for fall\, when shelters get busier and staff need all the help they can get. Needs vary week to week\, so we’ll be pitching in wherever necessary\, from light gardening outside to prepping and organizing materials inside. \nHelp us ease the cold-weather impact on homeless youth – email Cassandra to sign up today!

SUMMARY:Get healthy food to hungry hands with Food Lifeline
DESCRIPTION:Here at United Way\, we believe that hunger is a problem we can help solve – and it’s with great partners like Food Lifeline that we’re making strides towards achieving that goal. Food Lifeline works with the food industry and its surpluses to come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger\, including redirecting good food from manufacturers\, farmers\, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste. The organization provides 91\,000 meals per day to local food assistance programs\, and that\, combined with policy work\, creates a sustainable approach to stopping hunger. \nEach year\, Food Lifeline sorts through 40 million pounds of food. Inspecting and packing this food takes a lot of hands! Emerging Leaders will assist with inspection\, sorting and repacking donations for distribution to the network of 275 hunger relief partners across Western Washington. Email Cassandra to be one pair of those helping hands.

DESCRIPTION:Join a select group of Emerging Leaders for an exclusive look inside Moz’s ultracreative Seattle space and a conversation with CEO Sarah Bird. Light appetizers and drinks will be provided\, as well as the chance to network with like-minded attendees and Moz employees. What should you bring? A friend who’s interested and a question or two! \nSarah’s done a little bit of everything\, from studying philosophy and Chinese law to working as an associate attorney to serving as the eighth employee of a little start-up called Moz. She brings that wide-focus lens to both business and philanthropy\, putting an emphasis on fostering a company culture where employees are inspired – and given the resources and leadership they need – to succeed. \nSpace is limited for this insider event\, so make sure you reserve your spot today! \nSarah Bird serves as the CEO of Moz\, the world leader in search\, social\, and content marketing software. Prior to Moz\, Sarah practiced law and travelled the world. SUMMARY:Serve a warm meal with YWCA Angeline's
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another opportunity instead. \nIt seems that lately\, all anyone can talk about is the approaching cold weather\, and here at UWKC it’s no different! As the weather gets chilly\, warm food gets even more comforting – so Emerging Leaders are partnering with Angeline’s to provide homeless women a safe space for a hearty lunch. At Angeline’s\, these women not only have access to meals\, but also to laundry\, showers\, activities and connections to other services. \nAt Angeline’s\, we’ll add a fun touch to the dining room with colorful tablecloths and napkins before serving lunch to guests (usually 100-150 women each day!). It’s also a great opportunity to chat and offer a friendly face to those in need.

SUMMARY:Support young families with Westside Baby
DESCRIPTION:Pop quiz time!\nQ: How much does an adequate monthly supply of diapers cost per child? A: $70-$100 (that’s up to $1200 per year – just for diapers!)\nQ: How much of that cost is covered by food stamps or other assistance programs? A: $0 \nThose stats make Westside Baby’s work all the more impactful: they’re the only social service agency in the West King County area that collects\, inspects and distributes free diapers\, clothing\, cribs and safety gear for babies and children. In the past sixteen years\, they’ve provided $16.5 million worth of free diapers\, clothing and gear to help more than 195\,000 infants and children. \nWith all of the support Westside Baby provides to families\, we thought it only fair to support Westside Baby! Emerging Leaders will spend a few hours sorting donations of clothing and toys\, filling orders\, creating clothing bags\, and bundling diapers. Email Cassandra to reserve your space today.

SUMMARY:Eastside Special Project: Prep Jubilee REACH Thrift Store
DESCRIPTION:Far too often\, parents in our community have to make the choice between working to put food on the table and spending time with their kids. Jubilee REACH helps solve that problem on the Eastside\, where it works to provide access to assistance programs and youth services. They offer mentoring\, tutoring\, and over 20 after-school clubs and sports at various Bellevue public schools. The Thrift Store is a huge part of making that work possible\, and every dollar of net profit goes back to the community. \nIf you’ve ever worked in retail\, you know the drill: we’ll be in the front of the house (re-stocking the floors and shelves\, organizing racks and other household items\, and helping customers) and also the back (hanging clothes\, sorting through donations\, cutting price tags\, tagging prices on merchandise and receiving donations from donors). Email Cassandra to sign up and help out after work!

SUMMARY:Zillow's Rebekah Bastian addresses housing issues through a corporate philanthropy lens
DESCRIPTION:The Seattle Public Library is one of the few places in Seattle that hasn’t been impacted by the ever-rising cost of rent\, recreation\, or just living in general – it’s a welcoming space where anyone\, regardless of income\, employment\, or housing situation\, can gather. What better place to address the challenges our community faces around those exact issues? \nThis fall\, the Library is hosting Streetwise Revisited: A 30-year Journey\, an exhibit featuring the photography of Mary Ellen Mark and a series of events that focus on our city’s youth and family homelessness crisis. We are delighted to partner with The Seattle Public Library Foundation on a Speaker Series around this issue. \nBring a friend or colleague and join us downtown to hear from Rebekah Bastian\, Zillow’s VP of Product\, on how her company works to alleviate issues of rising housing costs and homelessness. Rebekah launched Zillow’s Community Pillar program\, which helps connect low income renters with affordable housing and also serves on several local boards and nonprofits\, including United Way’s ‘Out of the Rain’ Impact Council. She will talk about the development of the Community Pillar program and opportunities that tech companies have to make a social impact. \nSpace is limited for this event! Sign up here today. \nRebekah Bastian is Vice President of Product at Zillow\, driving the strategy and execution of product teams focusing on advertising\, financial systems\, and connecting real estate buyers with agents. Rebekah was one of Zillow’s first employees\, coming over from Microsoft in 2005\, and has led the development of several areas of the site since its launch. Rebekah earned her Masters of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. She is also mother to two boys\, and an aerial acrobat.

SUMMARY:Spend United Way's Day of Caring at FamilyWorks
DESCRIPTION:Day of Caring is Seattle’s biggest volunteer event of the year\, with tens of thousands of volunteers across King County lending a hand to hundreds of nonprofits. This year\, Emerging Leaders will spend the day at FamilyWorks\, a food bank and family resource center in Wallingford. FamilyWorks addresses not only the immediate need of hunger\, but also works on a long-term scale to build a community where families are financially stable and have the support they need to rely and build on. \nEmerging Leaders will be helping in all corners of the organization\, from sprucing up office space to tidying the Resource Center playroom to sorting and packing food at the Food Bank. Join us – and thousands of others in the Seattle area – to spend a day fostering a better\, stronger\, more connected community. SUMMARY:Hands-on lessons about food justice at Marra Farm
DESCRIPTION:Through its gardening projects\, Marra Farm not only cultivates food for those in need but also teaches neighborhood self-reliance\, environmental awareness and about issues like hunger relief and improved nutrition. We’ll be helping out in Lettuce Link’s Giving Garden\, a 3/4-acre plot on historic urban farmland. All of the produce grown in the Giving Garden stays in the South Park community and is distributed via food banks\, meal programs and the Work Trade program. \nWe’ll be all hands on deck for whatever Lettuce Link needs: we’re enlisted to help prepare soil and garden beds\, mix compost\, plant vegetable starts and seeds\, weed\, harvest and/or wash produce. Through hands on work in the fresh air and conversation with Marra Farm’s knowledgeable staff\, we’ll learn about the source of food\, food security\, organic farming and food justice. \nEmail Cassandra to sign up today!

SUMMARY:Provide for those in need at St. Mary's Food Bank
DESCRIPTION:For almost 75 years\, the Food Bank at St. Mary’s has been helping the hungry in the Central District and beyond. Today\, the Food Bank provides groceries to 6\,700 people per week through the Walk-In Program\, when anyone is welcome to come in and choose what they need for the week. In addition\, the Food Bank delivers food to those in need who are unable to leave their homes and provides a “No-Cook” Program for those who are currently experiencing homelessness and don’t have access to cooking facilities. \nEmerging Leaders will be providing direct service in the Food Bank\, helping those who have come to shop for groceries – a friendly face and a helping hand can go almost as far as a bag of food for those in need. A few volunteers will also put their art talents to good use\, helping the Food Bank create signage for their upcoming Gala fundraiser. \nJoin us to lend a hand and a smile – email Cassandra to sign up today!

SUMMARY:Help get healthy food to hungry kids with the Emergency Feeding Program
DESCRIPTION:This project is full! Please join us for a different awesome volunteer opportunity. \nThere are a million people in Washington at risk of going hungry every night\, and the Emergency Feeding Program aims to alleviate hunger by making nutritious food available when and where people need it. At the King County facility\, donations are collected\, sorted\, and packaged into fifteen different types of food bags – from diabetic to Asian or Latino or East African to baby. Then\, the Emergency Feeding Program partners with agencies around the county to deliver the food bags and ensure that every family\, no matter their financial situation\, has access to nutrition. \nWe’ll be lending a hand in various ways – labeling\, tapping and cleaning collection barrels; sorting food in the warehouse; maybe even some administrative assistance to help ensure operations are running smoothly! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Get ready for back-to-school with the YWCA!
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another opportunity instead. \nThe YWCA works to eliminate disparities that disproportionately affect women and families of color by opening the doors to opportunity and self-sufficiency. By empowering people how to navigate education\, health care\, and housing\, the YWCA is helping to ensure all communities in King County are equal – and that all kids in King County have an equal chance at success. The key to that success is education – and that’s where Emerging Leaders come in! \nWhen you’re young\, nothing says “back to school” more than sharpened colored pencils and that new-crayon smell – we’ll be stuffing and sorting school supplies so all kids are able to experience that joy come September.

SUMMARY:Learn from previously homeless Seattleites about the benefits and challenges of shelter communities
DESCRIPTION:The residents of the Pat Williams Apartments are all previously homeless single adults who are working towards building community with their neighbors in a sober living environment – and we’ll be joining them for games\, activities and snacks to help achieve that goal. \nThis property\, owned by Plymouth Housing Group\, is the organization’s first ever sober-intended building\, so we’ll be working to support the residents in their sobriety and towards meeting their own personal goals. Residents in this building may face other struggles as well – mental illness or a history of trauma – but by providing housing and a community environment\, Plymouth is able to help the residents rebuild their lives. \nThis is a great opportunity to interact with formerly homeless individuals that are now working towards stability and hear their stories.
