SUMMARY:Prep El Centro de la Raza for the upcoming GALA Auction!
DESCRIPTION:El Centro de la Raza works on behalf of the Latino community with services that address immediate needs like hunger\, health\, and homelessness\, as well as programs that promote self-sufficiency and empower the community. They provide a multitude of opportunities for youth\, including bilingual and multicultural services\, afterschool mentoring\, and workshops that deal with complex subjects like social change and community activism. \nTheir annual GALA Auction fundraiser is coming up\, and they need our help! Lend a hand after work as we beautify their outside space and prep materials for the auction inside – this means anything from sorting fliers to mail to creating giveaways for attendees. It’s just one evening of work for Emerging Leaders\, but the work we do will help El Centro fund its community work for the year to come! \nEmail Cassandra to sign up!

SUMMARY:Keep King County green with Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust
DESCRIPTION:This project is full! Please check out our other upcoming opportunities for ways you can get involved. \nLend a hand alongside your fellow Emerging Leaders\, building relationships and community as you work to preserve one of Western Washington’s most treasured features: its natural habitat and wildlife. You’ll spend your morning cleaning Three Forks Natural Area of litter and invasive species while enjoying an amazing up-close view of Mount Si – keep an eye out for elk\, eagles and trout! \nMany families in the area depend on the low-cost access to natural areas around the Seattle area to give their kids great experiences on a limited budget. By helping keep these areas green\, you’re protecting not only a valuable resource\, but a valuable space for families and children. \n

SUMMARY:Help end childhood hunger with United Way's Food Invasion
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for a different volunteer project instead. \nFor a lot of kids\, the end of school means the end of homework\, of finals\, of waking up early. For the thousands of King County kids who rely on free and reduced lunch\, though\, it also means the end of reliable meals. United Way of King County is working to end summer hunger through Summer Food Invasion sites around the area\, where kids can come to play and grab breakfast or lunch – or both! \nAs part of the program\, United Way is hosting Field Day events throughout the summer when the community can come tour sites and engage in fun activities with the kids. Those take a lot of prep – and that’s where Emerging Leaders come in! We’ll be creating additional games\, making decorations and putting together kits for groups and kids who visit the site. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Learn from previously homeless Seattleites about the benefits and challenges of shelter communities
DESCRIPTION:The residents of the Pat Williams Apartments are all previously homeless single adults who are working towards building community with their neighbors in a sober living environment – and we’ll be joining them for games\, activities and snacks to help achieve that goal. \nThis property\, owned by Plymouth Housing Group\, is the organization’s first ever sober-intended building\, so we’ll be working to support the residents in their sobriety and towards meeting their own personal goals. Residents in this building may face other struggles as well – mental illness or a history of trauma – but by providing housing and a community environment\, Plymouth is able to help the residents rebuild their lives. \nThis is a great opportunity to interact with formerly homeless individuals that are now working towards stability and hear their stories. All of the produce grown in the Giving Garden stays in the South Park community and is distributed via food banks\, meal programs and the Work Trade program.  Learn more when you join us to spend a few hours in the fresh air\, catch some sunshine and get your hands dirty! \nSpace is limited – email Cassandra to reserve your spot today.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Dr. Ben Danielson
DESCRIPTION:Join a select group of Emerging Leaders for an evening of conversation with one of Seattle’s leaders in medicine: Dr. Ben Danielson. We’ll provide light appetizers\, drinks\, and a chance to network with your peers and Dr. Danielson – all you need to bring is you! \nDr. Danielson will speak about how he combines his interests in human service and science as the director of the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic and why he’s passionate about the work United Way of King County does. Then we’ll open it up for Q&A\, so come ready with your questions. \nEmail Cassandra to reserve your spot. Space is limited to the first 50 people! \nAlong with two sisters\, Dr. Ben Danielson was raised by an amazing single mom who instilled in him an appreciation for the value of education and a desire to be a contributing member of the community. In college\, he decided that becoming a doctor was a good way to meld his scientific and human service interests. After finishing his undergraduate studies in Boston\, Dr. Danielson’s medical education\, residency\, and career have all been spent in Seattle. \nDr. Danielson has been the medical director of the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic since 1999. He works alongside dedicated\, talented staff who strive to uphold the clinic’s enduring tradition of growing wellness through quality care while engaging the community\, honoring culture\, and sustaining trust. He also works on the inpatient service at Seattle Children’s Hospital. \nDr. Danielson believes that the opportunity to serve an individual or a community is a cherished privilege. He also ascribes to the truism that health is more than healthcare and that any healthcare provider who strives to improve health must be active beyond the realm of their medical practice. Dr. Danielson works with several community groups and serves on the King County Board of Health\, the state’s health exchange board\, the United Way of King County board\, and the boards of other philanthropic organizations.

SUMMARY:Volunteer After Work With Rainier Valley Corps
DESCRIPTION:Our partner\, Rainier Valley Corps needs some help for their quarterly event. Join a group of Emerging Leaders to help with room set-up\, work registration\, greet incoming guests\, set up the food\, provide extra sets of hands during the event and clean up once it concludes. \nThe volunteer work itself will be quick\, but very helpful! The best part is seeing and participating in their event. It’s free\, includes yummy food and drink\, and a chance to hear from their Fellows about their experience building communities of color. There are ten RVC Fellows who are matched with community based organizations in Rainier Valley to strengthen the organization’s capacity and help with their community building efforts. The Fellows are a few months into their one-year terms and have great stories to share about the work that they’re doing. \nWe promise it will be interesting and you’re very likely to learn something new about what’s happening in the Rainier Valley neighborhood. The quarterly event is from 6-8 p.m. but your volunteer shift begins before and ends shortly after. If you’re unable to get there at 4\, but could come close to that\, we’d still love to have you. \nEmail Hannah to sign up. We need 10 volunteers! \n
