SUMMARY:Conversations for Change: Preventing Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of learning about King County’s housing ecosystem\, its barriers to entry\, and how we can work to prevent homelessness. \nYou know how cut-throat Seattle’s housing market can be; now imagine you’re trying to secure a lease while already unhoused… We believe preventing homelessness in the first place is one of the best ways to tackle the homelessness crisis. \nJoin us at Conversations for Change: Preventing homelessness\, a FREE\, interactive\, lunchtime discussion with our special guest Shkëlqim Kelmendi\, the founder and executive director of Housing Connector. \nKelmendi and his family immigrated to the United States as refugees following the Kosovo war. His experience growing up in a society torn by war and navigating a new country fuels his personal and professional commitment to serving his community. In 2020\, Housing Connector was recognized as a Fast Company World Changing Idea and Shkëlqim was selected as a Puget Sound Business Journal Innovator of the Year. \nKelmendi and Gordon McHenry\, Jr.\, President and CEO of United Way of King County\, will delve into King County’s housing ecosystem and share more about how we’re coming together to help people overcome barriers to access and retain housing. \nUnited Way is committed to making all our events as accessible as possible. When you register\, you’ll have an opportunity to indicate any accommodations you may need. Please note that a minimum of two weeks’ notice is necessary to arrange some accessibility needs. If you have any questions\, please reach out to eventregistration@uwkc.org.

SUMMARY:2024 Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Olympia\, WA on Thursday\, February 1st to advocate for the basic needs of post-secondary students. \nAt United Way\, public policy advocacy is one of the key pillars of our work. Each year\, we advocate for legislation that promotes our community’s ability to thrive–especially our Black\, Indigenous\, and other communities of color. We meet with local\, and state elected officials\, and members of Congress—during and outside legislative sessions asking lawmakers to ensure adequate funding streams to proactively create equitable access to a high quality of life and resources for all people. We also participate in coalitions and advocacy groups that meet with legislators and lobbyists so we can learn from each other about the latest work. \nJoin United Way supporters in Olympia for the 2024 Lobby Day\, as we urge policymakers to meet post-secondary students’ basic needs for navigation\, food\, housing\, mental and behavioral healthcare\, and childcare. You will have the chance to learn about Advocacy 101\, learn about this year’s legislative priorities for United Way and the Post Secondary Basic Needs (PSBN) Coalition\, hear directly from student representatives from the Washington Students Association and meet with your district legislators to share your views. \nNo prior advocacy experience is needed. Training and resources will be provided at the event itself. Learn more about our 2024 public policy agenda and sign up today to help build an equitable future for everyone.

SUMMARY:Belonging Bash
DESCRIPTION:Meet fellow donors and celebrate your collective impact in the community!\nThis year’s Belonging Bash is at Marination Ma Kai on Alki Beach. Get to know people like you\, who donate their time and energy all year long to make a difference in their communities. We’ll celebrate belonging to something bigger and grander than ourselves—Emerging Leaders 365 and Change Makers—all while taking in the stunning views of Alki Beach in the beautiful July weather. \n  \nGiving Community members are invited to share their talents with us on the mic in the form of spoken word\, poetry\, song\, lyrical rhymes\, or something else. Anything in the theme of “belonging” is welcome. After all\, that’s what brings us all together at United Way. Think about a time you felt your impact in the community\, a story that touched your heart\, or a song or talent that you find inspiring. If you have something you’d like to share\, sign up here! \n  \nWhether you are performing or showing up to deepen your sense of belonging\, this year’s bash is shaping up to be a spectacular event! \n  \nWe’ll also recognize some outstanding community members and the power of coming together to do what you can. And we see what you’re doing. Within United Way’s giving communities—you donate to help our most vulnerable neighbors\, you come out to volunteer any chance you get\, you learn about the issues\, and you love connecting with others. \n  \nSo\, take in the sunshine with us and get to know your giving community as you hear from folks on and off the mic as we celebrate the collective efforts of these two amazing groups. \n  \nSpace is limited and we want to see you there. \nCurrent Emerging Leaders 365 and Change Makers donors check your inboxes for your invite. \nNot yet a donor? Join us at the Belonging Bash by giving monthly at the $30 (Emerging Leaders 365) or $100 (Change Makers) level \n

SUMMARY:Walk with United Way at Seattle Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:Join United Way of King County in the largest Pride Parade in the Northwest on June 25. Show your pride or support your LGBTQIA2s+ community by showing up for the celebration. We want to see you: giving communities\, donors\, volunteers\, staff\, supporters and friends show up for equality! \n*Staging Announced*\nPride is moving to the afternoon! Staging was announced the morning of June 13 and we are meant to line up between 1:00pm – 1:30pm on the 4th avenue block between Jefferson and the Yesler Overpass.  That means if you had big plans Saturday night\, this timing is great news!  Do note the staging time is required and not recommended. \n \n  \nWe’ll meet you down 4th in the 21st spot of the line up.  This year’s theme is Galactic love so don’t be surprised if you see a couple of star wars helmets or suits. If you don’t know what to wear\, we’ve got you covered with t-shirts for you and your friends and gear to keep cool on a hot day. \n  \nMake sure to bring a water bottle. If you are coming with a little one\, you are welcome to pull them along in a wagon or even equip your younger ones with a set of wheels of their own to make it through the parade – set to end at 3:30pm. \n  \nThere are safety tents along the route to refill on water or step aside if needed. We will have extra swag that you can hand to the audience but be careful not to throw any items. \n  \nParking is LIMITED. We recommend taking transit to the parade or arriving early to find parking outside of the parade route. Plan to  meet during the staging window between 1:00pm – 1:30pm. \n  \nVolunteers will be enjoying themselves\, walking in the parade\, passing out goodies\, and holding the banner from time-to-time! \n  \nDon’t forget to let us know you’re coming and bring a friend! \n  \nThis activity is a volunteer project hosted by pride at United Way of King County. Be watchful of emails from pride@uwkc.org to stay up to date on staging. \n
