The idea of having a ‘year of impact’ on your community had the group at Peddler Brewery amped up last week. More than 150 young professionals came together to hear about United Way’s new Emerging Leaders 365 giving program.

Through the chatter in the room, the perks of the program were clear: The opportunity to make a difference every day. Networking. Volunteering. And connecting with business leaders.

Jonathan Sposato, Chairman of GeekWire and PicMonkey, was there to share how he’s made philanthropy a central part of his career. Part of the way he’s doing that is by chairing the United Way campaign this year with his wife, Heather Lowenthall. By being the chairs, they are putting in the time, talent and dollars to make a significant impact. AND they’re committing to bringing as many people along with them.

His challenge to the group to take their first step in shaping their community was met with enthusiasm. He provided concrete examples of how their donation would make an immediate difference:

• Three people joining would mean that one person could get housed through the Streets to Home program
• Gas for one month for the United Way Jobs Connect van, which takes homeless workers to and from their job sites
• Educational books and toys for two low-income families in the 2-year Parent Child Home Program.
