When someone becomes homeless, it is a
personal and community crisis.
If someone does fall into homelessness, Out of the Rain focuses on making it brief and one-time.

How it Works

We know that sometimes people just need a safe place to sleep in order to get back on their feet. Out of the Rain is:

Boosting emergency shelters: increasing the number of beds and investing in staff. Often at-capacity, shelters are forced to turn people away. We are investing in 150 new shelter beds this year as well as staff support to help move people out of shelter. Shelters are meant to be short-term solutions and we know that the longer people stay, the more difficult it is for them to change their situation. This increased investment in staff will help people connect more quickly to longer-term solutions.

Providing outreach workers with new tools. We are investing $350,000 in the Navigators program. These outreach workers have funds to help people who are sleeping on the street find immediate solutions that fit their individual needs. These funds provide things like transportation costs to reunite with family, a deposit for an apartment or car repairs.

SUCCESS TO DATE

In 2014, we helped 13,750 people living on the streets find a safe place to sleep. Our shelter strategy has been largely focused on single adults, where veterans are overrepresented. As a result, the One Night Count in 2015 saw a nearly 15% decrease in unsheltered veterans.

We recently funded an additional 150 shelter beds, particularly focused on single adults on the Eastside, youth in south King County and families experiencing homelessness for the first time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row fullwidth=”true”][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”75px”][vc_separator color=”black”][vc_empty_space height=”75px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1433522262178{margin-right: 30px !important;}”][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”false” el_class=”max-width-text”]

GOAL: Reduce number of people on the streets by 50%

With your help, by 2020 we reduce the number of people in the One Night Count by 50%. We will also reduce the number of people who return to homelessness within two years by 5%.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”false” align=”center” el_class=”max-width-text no-print”][print_button] Donate[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text disable_pattern=”false” el_class=”no-screen max-width-text”]Ways your support could be acknowledged: Potential mention in neighborhood newspapers and blogs – Potential mention in social media (e.g. Facebook posts and Tweets).
