Top 3 Reasons we love Supply Drives!

By United Way of King County, on February 19, 2016 | In Fighting Homelessness, Volunteering

It’s dark and gloomy outside and we’re all looking for ways to perk up and feel good! We’re gearing up for our Community Resource Exchange in about six weeks – a day of services for people that are struggling with homelessness. Getting a group together for a supply drive might be just the thing to get you out of your winter blues!

Here’s why we love ‘em:

  • Happy People! This is three top reasons all rolled into one. When you’re talking about brand new comfy socks and much-needed razors and deodorant, everyone’s happy: the people receiving them for sure, but also the people who donate them and the people who help package them into lovely hygiene kits!
  • Team Building. Joining together for something completely unrelated to your day job – and doing good while you’re at it. What’s not to love?!  Even the ‘often-resistant-to-join-in’ team members get in on the fun. We’re quick to play into people’s competitive side: which team can collect the most razors? Who can find the best socks? There are all sorts of ways to tie it back to team building!
  • Tapping into the power of empathy. Our city has recently declared a state of emergency around homelessness. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and, sometimes, even forget that behind the big numbers are individuals just like us. They’re people who feel best after a good shower with smells-so-good soaps, people who stand a little taller when they’re got new shoes and socks on.

So, there you have it. It’s easy and fun. So start thinking about who you want to join in the fun – you’ll find details here!
