Fuel Your Future

Every kid should have a breakfast brain

EAT SCHOOL BREAKFAST. GET SMART.

United Way of King County wants to help every student in the state of Washington have a Breakfast Brain. What does that mean? When kids eat better, they learn better.

75% of public school teachers say that students regularly come to school hungry. Busy lives and other factors make it hard for families to sit down for a nutritious breakfast.

That’s why encouraging students to eat school breakfast is so important. It’s a lot easier for kids to focus and learn when they have Breakfast Brain.

BREAKFAST CHALLENGE RULES

Any school with the School Breakfast Program is eligible to participate in the Breakfast Challenge and win prizes.

All breakfast participation data will compare October 2018 to October 20189 data from OSPI. Comparisons will be made based on percentage of student body participating in school breakfast out of overall school enrollment.

Schools are only eligible to win one of the following prizes: Grand prize, Most Improved School, and Most Improved Breakfast After the Bell School

Only schools that have implemented a Breakfast After the Bell model before October 31, 2019 are eligible for the Most Improved Breakfast After the Bell School prize.

BREAKFAST AFTER THE BELL

Breakfast After the Bell is an innovative and proven approach to increasing participation and access to school breakfast. By simply shifting breakfast to after the school bell rings and into the classroom, students have higher test scores, have better focus, and miss less school. On average King County schools that have implemented Breakfast After the Bell models have increased school breakfast participation by more than 25%.

You can learn more about Breakfast After the Bell here. If you are interested in considering this model for your school, email schoolbreakfast@uwkc.org for a school breakfast consultation and implementation support.
