If it’s April in Seattle, it’s time to get outdoors and take in the long-awaited sunshine. And that’s exactly what a group of almost 20 Emerging Leaders did spending 4 hours at our Second Saturday volunteering project at Seattle Community Farm. A few weeks ago, I joined a group of Emerging Leaders to volunteer at a Second Saturday project at Seattle Community Farm.

The farm’s giving garden provides up to 300 pounds of fresh product to the Rainier Valley Food Bank and to community members living on low incomes during the harvest season. Seattle Community Farm also has a curricula for children of all ages to learn through hands-on farming and nutrition education.

The group weeded 8 garden beds, moved blackberry plant into the green space, removed invasive plants and learned about the garden’s onsite honey bees which pollenate the produce. Lettuce Link envisions a city where people have equal access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. We work with and in communities to grow and share food that is fresh and nourishing.
