Take A Stand Against Poverty

Hundreds of our community members have volunteered to help prepare taxes as part of our statewide program, My Free Taxes Washington by United Way of King County. They’re helping hard-working people keep more of what they earn.

Are you interested in volunteering with the Free Tax Team? Unfortunately, volunteer registration is now closed. However, if you have tax experience, particularly VITA experience, you may be able to join. Please contact us freetax@uwkc.org and let us know about your tax experience and general availability. Please note that we ask any prospective volunteers to commit to training as quickly as possible, and that they agree to take on at least one shift per week for remainder of tax season.

If you don’t have tax experience, we recommend signing up for notification of volunteer registration for the 2027 tax season by filling out the form below. We generally reach out in the second week of October regarding tax volunteer opportunities.

As part of one of Washington’s largest free tax preparation programs, virtual volunteers communicate with our team through tools like Slack, Zoom, email, and an online client portal. They gain new skills and make a real difference — helping neighbors access cash for food, rent, and childcare. In 2025, they helped almost 13,500 community members access vital funds averaging $2,500 each.

*Average refunds include both state and federal tax credits.
**Tax experience is helpful but not needed. Our team will train and certify you in IRS tax preparation! Non-tax prep roles are also available.
***All volunteers must commit to at least one shift per week for 13 weeks, beginning the week of January 19 and ending April 19.
