Free Summer Meals is Back: Volunteers Needed June 13 to Help Families Access Food
United Way of King County is calling on community members to help spread the word about its Free Summer Meals Program, which provides free, nutritious meals to youth under 18 throughout King County.
As part of its outreach efforts, United Way is hosting a volunteer event on Thursday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Burien Community Center—and they’re looking for helping hands.
“This community-powered event invites volunteers to team up—on foot or by car—to place yard signs and spread the word about free summer meals available to youth across King County,” said Alexis Silva, Senior Community and Volunteer Engagement Manager at United Way of King County.
The event will kick off with a community gathering to reflect on the significance of the Free Summer Meals Program, which helps thousands of families bridge the gap when school is out and access to school meals disappears. Last summer, United Way of King County operated 200 Free Summer Meals locations countywide, serving nearly half a million meals while school was out to help parents offset increased food costs and inflation.
One in six Washington children is at risk of going hungry: Can you help?

Volunteers Needed—With Wheels or Walking Shoes
United Way is seeking volunteers with cars who can help distribute posters in neighborhoods throughout King County, as well as volunteers who are comfortable walking routes to post signs and flyers. These materials are vital to raising awareness and ensuring that families know where and how to access free summer meals.
“This is about more than signs—it’s about showing up for families,” Silva said. “We’re united in our belief that no child should go hungry. This program offers not just food, but dignity, relief, and a sense of community.”
A Lifeline for Families
The Free Summer Meals Program served over 500,000 meals across 200 King County sites last summer. Located in parks, schools, and other neighborhood spaces, these sites offer meals where kids already gather—no paperwork, no registration, just support.
The program is especially critical now, as proposed $290 billion federal cuts to SNAP benefits threaten to deepen food insecurity across Washington state. United Way’s efforts provide immediate relief to families, saving them hundreds of dollars in grocery costs each month—money that can go toward rent, school supplies, or other essential needs.
Be a Part of the Solution
Community members are encouraged to lend their time and energy on June 13 to help ensure that families in need are informed about this vital resource.
“Bring a car, a friend, a little time, and a lot of heart,” Silva said. “Together, we can make sure every family knows where to find a meal—and that they’re not facing this summer alone.”
