Cheers to 50 Years, Microsoft!

As Microsoft celebrates half a century of innovation, impact, and leadership, United Way of King County is proud to look back on the journey we’ve taken together from the very beginning—and the incredible things we’ve accomplished along the way.

Here are just a few highlights from our most recent collaborations:

A Bidding War for Good

During Microsoft’s GIVE Month in October, employees turned their competitive spirit into community impact through the Microsoft Give Month Auction. From exclusive experiences to one-of-a-kind items, bids flew fast and furious—all in support of several local non-profits. This year’s auction raised almost $2,000,000!

A Chapter to Remember

When Bill Gates released his memoir, Source Code: My Beginnings, Microsoft employees had the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes for a chance to meet him on the accompanying book tour.

Donations poured in—and with Microsoft’s generous match–the campaign raised over $131,000 for United Way of King County. The proceeds from the sales of Gates’ memoir will be donated to United Way Worldwide. Learn more about Bill Gates’ new book and his relationship with United Way in February’s United Times article.

All proceeds from the first installment of Bill Gates’ three-part memoir will go to United Way Worldwide.

Start Your Engines (For a Cause)

One of our favorite events each year is the Microsoft Car Show, where Microsoft employees and other community car enthusiasts show off their cool, luxurious, and quirky rides. As the event’s charity sponsor, United Way of King County benefits from entry fees, car show t-shirt and calendar sales, and sponsorship support. We even get to award the coveted “Charity Partner” trophy—and in 2024, it went to a tiny, grape-purple Subaru Kei Truck that stole our hearts.

United Way of King County employees Pear Sutarat, Sharon Magliano Feliciano, and Connor Walsh prepare to hand out trophies to the 2024 Microsoft Car Show winners.

Powered by People: Live UNITED @ Microsoft

A passionate team of employee champions—the Live UNITED @ Microsoft committee—supports and helps promote all this generosity. Led by Ryan Loen and Anand Naik, this powerhouse group brings United Way’s mission to life on Microsoft’s campus. Whether hosting volunteer events or rallying support during GIVE Month, their commitment to the work United Way does is unwavering and greatly appreciated!

For 50 years, Microsoft has been a force of innovation—and, just as importantly, a force for good. As we look back on our partnership and look ahead to what’s next, we’re grateful for the creativity, generosity, and heart that define our work together.

Here’s to many more years of impact.
