‘March for Equity’ With Us This MLK DAY

By United Way of King County, on January 17, 2025 | In Emerging Leaders 365

“True peace is not merely the abscence of tension; it is the presence of justice.” —Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Stride Toward Freedom, 1957

Hundreds will gather to ‘March for Equity’ at Garfield High School on January 20—the 39th anniversary of MLK Jr. Day and, coincidentally, the inauguration of Donald Trump as president.

Systemic issues cannot be solved in one day, but steps toward progress demand action. Entire marches do, too. United Way of King County invites you to join these steps forward by volunteering with us this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The event includes a rally, the march for peace, internship opportunities, workshops, youth-led programming, and a job fair. Volunteers will help by getting signs ready to distribute for the march right after the workshop and rally, which will be strategically dispersed throughout the Garfield High School parking lot.

Led by our Emerging Leaders 365 young professionals group, all are welcome to join. On this day—our county’s namesake—we hope you’ll take time to show up for you community with us.

“Let’s make volunteering a habit,” states the Emerging Leaders 365 mission this MLK Day.” Let’s truly get to know community issues. Let’s build relationships that pursue the peace and justice Dr. King lived and died for.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s revolutionary message stretches far beyond his lifetime, beyond streets and counties named for him, and beyond a single holiday on the calendar. It goes beyond inspirational messages—it’s a legacy by which our community can be transformed.

If you can’t volunteer in this event, we’re also hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. Week Lunch & Learn event on Wednesday. This event will remind us to center the ‘why’ in all of our volunteering experiences.
