United Way of King County mourns the passing of Bill Neukom, a devoted business, civic, and philanthropic leader who died last week at age 83.

The former Microsoft lawyer was not only a longtime major donor; Neukom served as Chair of the Gates Challenge Endowment, which was created in 1999 by the Gates Foundation endowment to help United Way offset our administrative and operating costs, thereby making more of the funds we raise available to address our community’s critical needs.

United Way completed the challenge ahead of schedule, officially closing the challenge on June 30, 2008.

Known for his signature bowties and bright smile, Neukom also served as president of the American Bar Association and founded the World Justice Project, a multidisciplinary nonprofit organization that advances the rule of law worldwide.

In 2017, United Way of King County granted Neukom the Beacon Award for Visionary Philanthropic Leadership.

United Way is grateful for Neukom’s extraordinary generosity and exemplary leadership as the Chair of the Gates Endowment campaign. His efforts with the campaign have had a lasting impact, ensuring that more funds will go directly into serving the communities we serve.
