Take A Stand Against Poverty

Join hundreds of fellow volunteers in Washington’s largest free tax preparation program—United Way’s Free Tax Prep Campaign—and help families keep more of what they earn!

Looking to gain new skills, connect with new friends, and make a real difference? As a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer, you’ll help neighbors access cash for food, rent, and childcare—and sometimes even deliver the news of a life-changing refund. It’s a chance to grow, connect, and change lives in our community.

In 2025, our volunteers helped almost 13,500 community members access vital funds averaging $2,500* each. With your help, we can reach even more.

*Average refunds include both state and federal tax credits.
**Tax experience is helpful but not needed. Our team will train and certify you in IRS tax preparation! Non-tax prep roles are also available.
***All volunteers must commit to at least one shift per week for 13 weeks, beginning the week of January 19 and ending April 19.

Become a Volunteer Tax Preparer

Filing taxes can be daunting, especially for low-income families who depend on tax refunds and credits. As a volunteer tax preparer, you can ease their worries by preparing returns, maximizing credits, and guiding clients through the process.

Become an Intake Volunteer

Taking the fear out of tax filing starts when a client walks through the door. As an intake volunteer, you’ll welcome clients who arrive at the tax site, maintain the site waitlist, ensure that clients have all required documents, and help maintain tax site flow.

Become a Virtual Tax Volunteer

As a virtual volunteer, you’ll communicate with our team through tools like Slack, Zoom, email, and an online client portal.

Both tax preparer and intake volunteer roles are available. Virtual tax preparation roles require prior tax volunteer experience with our program or similar. Virtual intake does not require any prior volunteer experience.
