Filing taxes?

If you make less than $80,000 a year, take note: United Way of King County will prepare your taxes for free.

That’s right, free.

Not at a 30% discount. Not half off with a Groupon. Not file one, get one free.

But absolutely no cost, no fine print, no kidding, the-only-thing-you’ll-pay-is-attention free!

Why pay to have your taxes prepared—the average cost to submit an IRS Form 1040 and state return with no itemized deductions is $220, according to Investopedia—when you can have them done at no cost? And you can trust United Way to prepare your taxes, because we’ve been filing returns for 20 years.

The United Way Free Tax Preparation Campaign runs from January through April and helps people take advantage of earned income tax credits, the nation’s most vital anti-poverty measure. Last year alone we helped 6,400 filers secure more than $11 million in income tax refunds. We also help King County residents with Individual Taxpayer Identification Number applications and renewals at select sites.

In addition, this year Washington state launched the Working Families Tax Credit, a new state provision that will give yearly cash payments of as much as $1,200 to nearly 400,000 low-to-moderate income households in Washington state. Families are free to use the credit however they wish to meet their needs.

The sign at Seattle Public Library’s main branch says it all.

So, let us do the work of preparing your taxes so you can get back more of your hard-earned money! Check our list of United Way Free Tax Prep sites for preparation dates and times:

Please note: The IRS prevents United Way from preparing certain types of tax returns. For example, we cannot prepare returns for income earned in states outside of Washington or returns that involve cryptocurrencies.
