There’s a Volunteering Opportunity With Your Name on It!
This is National Volunteer Month’s National Volunteer Week!
National Volunteer Week (April 16-22) was established in April 1974 by President Richard Nixon to celebrate people nationwide who volunteer and to encourage the practice of devoting a few hours or more to helping others. It coincides with April’s National Volunteer Month, which was established by President George H.W. Bush in 1991.
At United Way of King County, we would like to use this week and month to highlight volunteer opportunities from members of our coalitions committed to racial equity—the Black Community Building Collective and the Racial Equity Coalition.
Most groups within these coalitions offer many volunteer opportunities each month; we’re highlighting a few.
Asian Counseling and Referral Services (ACRS) seeks volunteers for its Club Bamboo senior center. Every Monday through Friday, Club Bamboo offers nutritious and locally sourced meals targeting Asian American and Pacific Islanders, while sponsoring culturally-rooted physical activities such as yoga, Vietnamese stick exercises and qigong. ACRS is seeking volunteers at Club Bamboo for positions such as clerical assistant, host/cashier and kitchen helper. For more information, click here.
Byrd Barr Place has a volunteer opportunity for a food bank home delivery assistant. The food bank home delivery assistant will accompany the food bank coordinator on the home delivery route, helping deliver grocery bags of food to housebound individuals and families. The job is slated to last a minimum of three months, working up to four hours per week. Applicants must be able to lift at least 25 pounds. For more information, click here.
El Centro De La Raza is seeking volunteers in its facilities department. El Centro De La Raza needs help with general maintenance at our historic main building. Maintenance tasks may include deep cleaning, painting, yard upkeep, repairs, trash pickup, and landscaping around our exterior spaces including its playground and Cesar Chavez garden. Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) seeks volunteers for its cultural and social events. Volunteers can donate their time by assisting with events that promote strong identification and connection to the Philippine culture. Volunteer tasks include helping prepare for and work during FCS events and performances. For more information, click here.
Supporting Partnerships in Education and Beyond (SPEB) seeks volunteers for know your rights advocate positions. This role is for those interested in supporting community organizing teams with accurate information about their rights, responsibilities, and pathways to advocating within their school, district or state. Technology Access Foundation (TAF) seeks volunteers for its program/workshop partner positions. The role is for those interested in developing a program or workshop in partnership with TAF to provide students with opportunities to increase their knowledge in STEM and life skills.
